General Medication Fact Sheet for Relafen
| Field | Information |
|---|---|
| Medication Name | Relafen |
| Generic Name | nabumetone |
| Boxed/Label Warning | Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including nabumetone, cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events (heart attack and stroke) and serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These risks may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use. Relafen is contraindicated for the treatment of peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. |
| Purpose | To relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. |
| Mechanism of Action | Relafen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which reduces the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that cause pain, fever, and inflammation in the body. |
| Dosage Forms | Tablets |
| Available Strengths | 500 mg, 750 mg |
| Dosage Frequency | Typically started as a single 1000 mg dose once daily. The dose can be adjusted up to 2000 mg per day, given as a single dose or divided into two doses. |
| Common Side Effects | Stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, nausea, dizziness, headache, rash, ringing in the ears (tinnitus). |
| Serious Side Effects | Heart attack, stroke, stomach ulcers or bleeding, new or worsened high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver damage, anemia, and severe skin or allergic reactions. |
| Drug Interactions | Increased risk of bleeding with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) and aspirin. Can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors and diuretics. Concurrent use with corticosteroids or other NSAIDs increases the risk of stomach ulcers. |
| Important Notes | Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible to minimize risks. Alcohol can increase the risk of stomach bleeding. |
| Storage | Store at room temperature (68°F to 77°F or 20°C to 25°C) in a tightly closed container, away from moisture and light. |
| Missed Dose | If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at once. |
| Alternatives | Celecoxib (Celebrex), Meloxicam (Mobic), Ibuprofen, Naproxen. |
Relafen Alternatives
| Medication | Mechanism of Action | Notes |
