General Medication Fact Sheet for Treximet
| Field | Information |
|---|---|
| Medication Name | Treximet |
| Generic Name | Sumatriptan and Naproxen Sodium |
| Boxed/Label Warning | NSAIDs like Naproxen, a component of Treximet, increase the risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use. Treximet is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. NSAIDs like Naproxen, a component of Treximet, increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at greater risk for serious GI events. |
| Purpose | Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. |
| Mechanism of Action | Combines a selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist (Sumatriptan) and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (Naproxen sodium). Sumatriptan constricts cranial blood vessels and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. Naproxen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing prostaglandin synthesis, thereby reducing inflammation and pain. |
