General Medication Fact Sheet for Zenhale
| Field | Information |
|---|---|
| Medication Name | Zenhale |
| Generic Name | Mometasone/Formoterol |
| Boxed/Label Warning | Long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists (LABA), such as formoterol, when used alone, increase the risk of asthma-related death. Zenhale contains a LABA (formoterol). When treating patients with asthma, Zenhale should be used only as additional therapy for patients not adequately controlled on a long-term asthma control medication (e.g., inhaled corticosteroid) or whose disease severity clearly warrants initiation of treatment with both an inhaled corticosteroid and a LABA. Once asthma control is achieved and maintained, assess the patient at regular intervals and step down therapy (e.g., discontinue Zenhale) if possible without loss of asthma control, and maintain the patient on a long-term asthma control medication. Do not use Zenhale for patients whose asthma is adequately controlled on low- or medium-dose inhaled corticosteroids. |
| Purpose | Maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 12 years of age and older. |
| Mechanism of Action | Mometasone is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways. Formoterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that relaxes airway muscles, improving airflow. |
| Dosage Forms | Inhalation Aerosol |
| Available Strengths | 50 mcg/5 mcg per actuation, 100 mcg/5 mcg per actuation, 200 mcg/5 mcg per actuation |
| Dosage Frequency | Two inhalations twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. |
| Common Side Effects | Headache, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, dysphonia (hoarseness), oral candidiasis (thrush). |

| Drug Interactions | Beta-blockers, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants, diuretics, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. |
| Important Notes | Not a rescue medication. Use only for maintenance treatment. Rinse mouth after each use to prevent thrush. Consult your healthcare provider immediately if breathing problems worsen. |
| Storage | Store at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep canister tightly closed. |
| Missed Dose | Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose. |
